Thinking of building a new home or simply giving your home a face lift? Today's floor plans may give you a challenge, with more open floor plans. It is important for the home to flow and lots of decisions will have to be made. Brick, plumbing, electrical, room planning, paint, furniture, and window treatments are a few of the decisions to be made. You realize that you need help…

Melba Jackson is an interior designer who will partner with you as you work your way from "mortar and bricks to hanging the pictures." She has been operating her own business, Melba Jackson Interiors, since 1986 and will help you as much or as little as you like. She is driven by one simple goal – she wants the interior design to be a reflection of your tastes, not hers. "I don't want people to walk into a house and say, "Oh that's a Melba Jackson design", says Jackson. "More than anything I want it to be their home. I get to walk away from a project when it is over; my customer has to live with it every day. It must reflect their tastes, not mine."

Most of the projects that Melba takes on involve meetings with architects and homeowners – prior to and during the construction phase – that ensure your new home will be constructed in a way to support the interior design. Melba has a talent for design and color that emerged at a very young age. What she brings to the table is a lifelong passion for bringing together eclectic design elements and making them work. It's all she's ever done, and she does it well.

"People want to get away from the traditional look. We are starting to add a contemporary flair to a traditional home; artwork or a piece of furniture to brighten things up and make it more interesting. Twenty-five years ago, everything had to match perfectly. Now you can add together antiques, traditional,
and contemporary all in the same room. I tell my customers that every home needs a surprise; it's nice to break things up a bit," says Jackson.

When you build up a list of clientele and gain their trust, often they will use your design services no matter where they go and tell their friends about you. These referrals have led Melba to such faraway places as Chicago and even Tokyo, Japan. Melba's reputation has been built slowly and steadily through the years by working with the customer, not for the customer.

"Every client usually becomes a friend, and some of my best friends are clients. I don't do a lot of commercial jobs, but often when I do someone's home, they ask if I can help them with their business." She is currently working on a dentist's office in Charleston.
