COLUMBIA, SC -  February 2010 - As George W. "Bill" Rogers approached the podium for a few remarks, 440 guests awaited what this quiet man might say. Just as his daughter, Louise Slater, alluded to in his tribute video, his response was simply, "Thank you very much."

Although the words Rogers speaks are typically minimal, his heart is big and his impact on the Midlands is even greater. The Palmetto Society hosts the Humanitarian of the Year event each year in order to recognize those, like Rogers, who have made an extraordinary impact in the community through philanthropy and service.  In this case, the event provided a much needed opportunity to honor a man who typically goes about his work quietly, never seeking recognition.

Young adults from the Department of Juvenile Justice Friends of Justice ushered guests to their tables as the Claflin University Jazz Ensemble filled the ballroom with big band sounds. Rogers has been instrumental in supporting both organizations and was pleased these talented youth could be incorporated into the evening.

The tribute to Rogers was a series of speakers who truly captured the essence of his personality. Rev. Dr. Bill Bouknight, former pastor of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church shared remarks about his humility and his willingness to support the church in leadership positions.

J. Cantey Heath also spoke and his words prompted many laughs, bringing to light Rogers' competitiveness in golf and hunting, as well as his straightforward way of conducting himself.

Samuel Tenenbaum, United Way of the Midlands 2005 Humanitarian of the Year, presented Rogers with the award.

"It's the people like Bill Rogers that give hope to those who may be struggling through life," said Tenenbaum. "It's the people like Bill Rogers that make this community a better place. As a board member, a philanthropist and a leader in Columbia and across South Carolina, it's a great thing that this honorable man had an evening to be in the spotlight."
