Around Columbia
The 17th Annual South Carolina Oyster Festival
Sunday, November 18, 2012
COLUMBIA, SC - Cool fall weather means oyster season
in South Carolina, and the capital city's largest outdoor oyster roast
is back. On Sunday, November 18, 2012, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Liquid
Assets will present the 17th Annual South Carolina Oyster Festival on
the grounds of the Robert Mills House and Hampton-Preston Mansion.
The event is family-friendly, with the feeling of an afternoon picnic in
the heart of downtown Columbia, SC's historic district. Guests are
encouraged to bring camp chairs and picnic blankets and can enjoy live
music all day, a variety of food and drink vendors, inflatables for the
kids, arts and craft vendors, and a Celebrity Oyster Shucking Contest.
The South Carolina Oyster Festival brings in over 10,000 pounds of fresh
oysters, sold steamed in buckets or fried in baskets. Long shucking
tables make for a fun, communal atmosphere. A portion of the proceeds
from the festival will benefit the local non-profit, Pawmetto Lifeline.
The festival features two stages for live entertainment, featuring the
bands Tokyo Joe, Black Iron Gathering, Reggie Sullivan Band, Rival
Brothers and Tom Hall & the Plowboys. The lighthearted, annual
Celebrity Oyster Shucking Contest will take place at 12:45 p.m. behind
the Hampton-Preston Mansion.
Oysters will be sold by the serving. Attendees are encouraged to bring
their own gloves and knives to shuck oysters, or they can be purchased
at the festival. Other food for sale will range from sandwiches to
snacks to full plates from vendors and food trucks. Beverages such as
beer, wine and soft drinks will be sold.
Pre-sale tickets will be sold November 1-16 for $5 at the Robert Mills
House Gift Shop, at Pearlz Oyster Bar, Hampton Hill Athletic Club, and
at www.etix.com.
Tickets will be $10 after November 16 and at the door. Children 12 and
under receive free admission. No coolers or pets, please.
