Painting Interior Scenes

October 20, 27; November 3, 10, 24; December 1 (1 pm – 6 pm)

COLUMBIA, SC - Join Critchfield-Sales, for this unique interior-scene painting workshop. The six-session workshop will take place in some of Columbia’s most unique interiors ranging from historic house museums to private residences and historic commercial spaces.

Emphasis will be placed on the way light moves through space and the experience of seeing from the interior to the exterior and from one space into another. Participants will study the psychology of a painting through discussions about the mood and atmosphere created by different types of light. The works of Rembrandt, Adolph Menzel, John Singer-Sargent, Anders Zorn, Edgar Degas, Edouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard, Vilhelm Hammershoi, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Gwen John and others will be studied and analyzed for their formal, technical and contextual value in relation to the workshop.

With six locations involved in this workshop, participants will produce at least one painting per class and come away with a portfolio of small-scale oil paintings of interiors. Due to limited space and mess-sensitive settings, a french-easel and plein-air painting equipment is required for in-class work.

Participants must provide their own materials. Each 4-hour work session will conclude with a one-hour group discussion.
