City Center Partnership Unveils Public Art Installation - Thursday at Noon
COLUMBIA, SC - February 1, 2012 - City Center Partnership in conjunction with the City of Columbia announces the installation of “Lovely Rita the Meter Maid” at noon on Thursday, February 2 at 1136 Washington Street in front of the City of Columbia’s Parking Payment Center. The art piece was created by artist, Matthew Kramer for “Change for Change”, a community art project transforming parking meters into art to raise money benefiting the Climate Protection Action Campaign.
“Lovely Rita the Meter Maid” was acquired by City Center Partnership through the efforts of its Public Art Committee. City Center Partnership has identified 17 sites on Main Street that can accommodate public art. Currently, 125 defunct City of Columbia parking meters have been donated and retrofitted with new posts and bases, and are waiting to be turned into works of art.
