Nov 12, 2009
COLUMBIA, SC - November 12, 2009 - Colonial Life Arena, managed by Global Spectrum takes action to set up a recycling program to make the arena more environmentally friendly through a grant funded by DHEC in conjunction with the City of Columbia. This unveiling event of Cocky’s new “green” shirt will also include the following speakers: Tom Paquette, General Manager for Colonial Life Arena, Michael Koman, Director of USC Sustainability and Robert Anderson, Public Works Director for the City of Columbia. Special appearance will also be made by Can Guy and Bottle Guy who are a part of DHEC’s Recycle Guys.
This grant will kick start recycling efforts at the arena by placing recycling containers throughout the concourse and premium areas to collect the following recycling items: plastic, aluminum, clear glass and paper.
“This is a big step in the right direction to get the community involved in our efforts to be environmentally friendly at all of our events at the arena,” says Tom Paquette, General Manager for Colonial Life Arena.
“This cooperative effort through the support of the University and partnership with DHEC and the City of Columbia has laid the ground work to help benefit our community. It is a perfect example of how Global Spectrum, the University, the city and the state can achieve great things together,” says Paquette.
Koman, Director of USC Sustainability says, “The new recycling initiative at the Colonial Life Arena on the University of South Carolina campus has evolved out of past and current partnerships with our community partners and supports our many efforts to green the University and become a more sustainable campus. Not only does this initiative serve to educate the half a million visitors that come through the Arena each year, but it will also serve as an example for others throughout the state to follow.”
“I’m excited about the initiative and thank the Colonial Life Arena and the City of Columbia for their efforts to support our goals of conserving resources and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. This effort alone has the potential of eliminating over three metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere each year”, said Koman.
