Jim Apple, Chairman and CEO of First Citizens Bank, named Greater Columbia Chamber’s 2009 Ambassador of the Year

COLUMBIA, SC - September 9, 2009 - Jim B. Apple has been selected as the 2009 Ambassador of the Year by the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce.

The Ambassador of the Year is defined as someone who best exemplifies outstanding ethics and responsibility of influencing the promotion and preservation of the Greater Columbia area. This designation goes to someone who serves as a role model for business involvement in the community and has contributed to the image of the Greater Columbia area. Within the community, Apple is given a high level of respect for his leadership, corporate responsibility and public service, which is indicative of someone receiving this high honor. Previous Ambassadors include Dr. Andrew Sorensen, Bill Boyd and Hootie and the Blowfish.

Apple currently serves as the Chairman and CEO of First Citizens Bank and Chairman, President and CEO of First Citizens Bancorporation of South Carolina, Inc. Colleague and coworker, James Bennett, says, “I have worked with Jim for the past 20 years, and he is someone who leads with both his head and his heart. He leads by example and encourages his executive leadership team to take an active role in the community.”

Apple was previously chairman of City Center Partnership, Columbia College’s Board of Trustees, Central SC Alliance and the Housing First Initiative for the City of Columbia. Mike Briggs from the Central SC Alliance comments, “Jim has always been a huge supporter of what we do. He believes in the region, the quality of life here, and the special nature of this place. He has been an advocate since I have known him.”

Apple will be honored at the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Gala and Silent Auction on Thursday, October 1st at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.
