South Carolina Public Charter School District Chairman names Dr. Wayne Brazell as Superintendent of the district

COLUMBIA, SC - August 25, 2009 - South Carolina Public Charter School District Chairman Don McLaurin announced today that Dr. Wayne Brazell as been named Superintendent of the district.  “We are excited that Dr. Brazell has decided to accept the challenge of leading our district as we strive to create a network of charter schools that will offer public school innovation and will be committed to excellence.  Dr. Brazell has demonstrated his dedication to these principles throughout his distinguished career.  His reputation as one of the state’s leading educators adds to the credibility of this relatively new venture in public education” 

Mr. McLaurin noted that the district conducted a nationwide search which drew the interest of educators from all over the country.  Dr. Brazell is currently the Superintendent of Laurens County School District 56 in Clinton, South Carolina.

Brazell will assume the duties of the Superintendent of the Charter School District in October of this year.

Dr. Brazell stated, “I am excited about the opportunity to work with the South Carolina Public Charter School District.  I sincerely believe that the charter school movement in South Carolina will have a profound positive influence on public education for many years to come. My goal is to insure that the Public Charter School District becomes a national model of effectiveness in the charter school movement.”

The SCPCSD is one of only two such school districts in the country.  It currently has seven schools in operation and an additional six who have been chartered to open in 2010.
