Gov. Nikki Haley praises DSS welfare-to-work success
Oct 3, 2012
COLUMBIA, SC - October 3, 2012 - Governor Nikki Haley recognized the South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) for having more than doubled the number of welfare recipients who got jobs and got off welfare – 12,298 and climbing. The goal originally set by DSS Director Lillian Koller in September 2011 was to get 10,120 welfare recipients jobs and off welfare by June 30, 2012, compared to only 5,060 in 2010.
“I have been beyond thrilled with the leadership Lillian Koller has been showing,” said Gov. Haley. “What we are announcing today is that Lillian and her team at DSS have taken 12,298 people that were on welfare and put them to work….Lillian has, through good corporate partners that were willing to take them on, gone and said ‘You deserve better, and this is how we're going to get you there.’ I want to one, thank her, and also thank the companies that were willing to say ‘Yes, we want to be a part of the solution, and not continue to complain about the problem.’”
A number of employers stepped up to hire these DSS clients and create win-win-win outcomes for their businesses, these families, and their communities.
Jobs ranged from companies like WalMart, Lowes, Home Depot, Best Western Hotels, Waffle House, K-Mart, Dollar General, and Dairy Queen to small businesses like Carolina Staffing, McCall Farms, Montrose Manor Assisted Living, The Tax Doctor, Little Scholars Academy, Breaker’s Convenience Store, Tire and Oil, and Amick Farms.
A list of the employers in each county is on the DSS website.
“We want to acknowledge these businesses for being smart by taking advantage of this opportunity to help themselves while helping families get out of poverty,” Koller said. “Bottom line, work always pays better than not working. Parents are working and supporting their children and children are growing up with the example of working parents.”
