Toucan Tuesday Partnership Brings in More Than 4,200 Pounds of Food
Aug 31, 2012
COLUMBIA, SC - August 31, 2012 - Harvest Hope Food Bank and Riverbanks Zoo and Garden announce this summer’s Toucan Tuesday partnership was a complete success, almost doubling the amount of food that visitors brought to the zoo last summer (2011). Between June 12 and August 28 this summer visitors brought in 4,218 pounds of food, more than one ton over last year’s total of 2,125.
Each week Harvest Hope collected the canned goods on Wednesday mornings and distributed to hungry families through their network of Emergency Food Panties and agency partners to feed hungry families across 20 SC counties. Harvest Hope provided over 5,475 meals with the food collected through this summer’s Toucan Tuesdays.
Every Tuesday this summer from June 12 until August 28, Riverbanks Zoo offered the chance for two to visit for the price of one with a donation of two cans of non-perishable food to Harvest Hope. This made a wonderful opportunity for families to save money on a trip to Riverbanks Zoo, praised as the 4th best zoo in the US by TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel website, while doing their part to help Harvest Hope feed hungry families.
