Jul 31, 2012
HARTSVILLE, SC - July 31, 2012 – John Anthony (Tony) Floyd has accepted an appointment as Coker College Vice President of Administration and Legal Counsel.
“Tony’s commitment to Hartsville is legendary,” said Coker College President Robert Wyatt. “He brings not only considerable legal expertise but also a deep understanding of risk assessment and management, which are increasingly important disciplines in higher education administration.”
“Coker College has long been a part of my personal and professional life,” said Floyd. “I feel like I grew up on Coker’s campus. I spent years as a child studying piano with Alice Smith and much of my teenage years with Dr. Womble and his family in the president’s house, because his stepson was my best friend.
“I am passionate about joining Dr. Wyatt and his administrative team to make things even better here,” Floyd added.
An attorney and managing shareholder in the law offices of Floyd & Gardner in Hartsville, Floyd has many years of experience in financial management as well as financial and trust accounting. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of South Carolina and a Juris Doctor, with the Order of Barristers, from Campbell University School of Law.
In Hartsville, Floyd serves on the Board of Directors of the Byerly Foundation and the Hartsville Country Club and is a member of the Hartsville Museum Commission. He was honored as the Rotarian of the Year in 2005.
In addition to providing oversight of administrative areas such as accounting, human resources, campus services, the bookstore and Kalmia Gardens, he will also be responsible for risk assessment and will serve as the college’s legal counsel. His appointment begins Sept. 1.
An associate professor of music at Coker, Smith taught from 1935 through the early 70s, and C. Hilburn Womble was president of Coker College from 1975 through 1980.
