COLUMBIA, SC - June 1, 2012 - DESA, Inc., a Columbia-based consulting firm, has recently awarded collegiate scholarships to six South Carolina students as part of the company’s annual scholarship program.

Recipients include Sylvia Vickers, a junior at Central Carolina Technical College majoring in nursing; Sterling Davis, a recent graduate of Lexington High School who has been accepted into Clemson University’s audio technology program; Kaitlin Carpenter, a University of South Carolina sophomore majoring in French; Amber Bolton, a recent graduate of Eau Claire High School who plans to attend Johnson C. Smith University to study criminal justice; and finally, Charles James and Dwight James, Jr., both recent graduates of Dutch Fork High School who plan to attend Clemson University to major in engineering.

Vickers, Davis and Carpenter are all children of previous or current employees of DESA. Vickers and Davis also attend the Clement Road Church of God with DESA’s president and chief executive officer, Diane Sumpter. Bolton was introduced to DESA through the firm’s relationship with the Columbia Housing Authority. The James’ are sons of the South Carolina State Conference NAACP executive director; an organization that DESA also consistently supports through volunteer work and charitable donations.
Each recipient shows incredible aptitude and ambition in their respective studies and DESA is proud to encourage their pursuit of higher education. Sumpter said, “Each student has made such great contributions to our community during their high school and college careers and all have big dreams for their futures. I get excited when I see our youth passionate about education and that is something I’m proud to support. On behalf of DESA, I wish all of these students the best as they move forward in their education.”
DESA’s philanthropy program regularly contributes to educational programs, including the distribution of annual collegiate scholarships to students across the state and the ongoing development of programs that support local schools that have underprivileged student populations.
In fact, DESA’s recently awarded scholarships bring the firm’s total educational donations for the year to over $12,000. The total amount given also includes contributions to Hyatt Park, Forest Lake and Conder Elementary Schools, Richland County School District One and Two Foundations, and a substantial donation given to Midlands Technical College’s African-American Male Scholarship fund.
DESA is dedicated to empowering young persons through education and looks forward to continuing its corporate philanthropy throughout the coming year. To keep up with the latest news on DESA’s endeavors and to read more about the company’s service lines, visit www.DESAInc.com.
