On The Move
From the Court of Appeals to Nexsen Pruet - Tanya Gee Joins Litigation Group in Columbia
Apr 2, 2012
Before joining the firm’s Appellate Law and Business Litigation groups, she served as Chief Staff Attorney and Clerk of Court for the South Carolina Court of Appeals. In those roles, she supervised and trained attorneys and administered the state’s intermediate appellate court consisting of nine active judges, one retired judge, their chambers, the staff attorneys’ office, the docketing office, and all support personnel.
“Tanya has a rare blend of qualifications that makes her a strong attorney and a great addition,” said Val H. Stieglitz, Chair of Nexsen Pruet’s Business Litigation Practice Group.
“Tanya came to us very highly recommended,” added William W. “Billy” Wilkins, Nexsen Pruet’s Appellate Practice Group Leader. “Her outstanding legal expertise and unique technical skills – combined with a wealth of experience at the South Carolina Court of Appeals – further strengthens our comprehensive litigation and appellate services.” Wilkins is a former Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
She began her legal career as law clerk to Chief Judge Kaye G. Hearn, now of the South Carolina Supreme Court. Ms. Gee also served as a temporary law clerk for Judge C. Tolbert Goolsby while he sat on the trial bench as a special circuit court judge. A frequent lecturer on South Carolina legal trends, she has twice presented the annual civil law update to the appellate court judges, circuit court judges, and their law clerks at the South Carolina judicial conference.
Gee has earned recognition from a number of prestigious organizations throughout her career. Most recently, she was included in the 2010 listing of The State newspaper’s “20 Under 40” class of accomplished, young professionals. In 2009, she became only the second attorney to receive both the Bronze and Silver Compleat Lawyer Awards from the University of South Carolina School of Law Alumni Association. She also received South Carolina Lawyers Weekly’s “Leadership in the Law” award.
Gee earned an undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Winthrop University and a law degree, cum laude, from the University of South Carolina School of Law. While there, she was a member of the Order of Wig and Robe, the Associate Students Works Editor for the South Carolina Law Review, the President of the USC Law Pro Bono Board, and the President of the Public Interest Law Society.
